This is an amazing way to show a child how to write letters and numbers- the "computer" writes it, starting at the top, etc., and then the child copies it- a younger child can use his or her finger, and older child can use the stylus pen. Pen is attached, but at middle, so works well for left handed as well as right handed. We also have a well regarded paper handwriting kit, but when we do that it always feels like I am lecturing the kids, and it isn't much fun. I would still recommend the paper product because it is more precise, and kids have to get used to writing on paper, but this toy is a wonderful companion piece. I think this toy is best for introducing the basics (which is REALLY important) and also to use as a fun reward to use while learning how to write. Highly recommend! And at this price, we got 2- one for each child! Also wanted to add that we are extremely pleased by the quality of this toy- it is very well made- especially the touch screen- my kids think they have their own grown up tablet!!! FYI- volume control- the preset volume is too loud but you can lower it a lot- all you have to do is press the second reddish-purple button from the top left- and then use your finger to slide the volume bar to desire setting and press the check mark! It took us a while to figure this out! A+++++ for this toy!!!!

Kids like to sing. The microphone shuts off when the song ends, so they get 30 seconds of joy and then they have to spend 10 seconds fooling the toy into letting them sing again.

The microphone doesn't always turn on.
It's not obvious as to why, and I'm scratching my head as to why a KARAOKE toy would EVER turn off the mic.
I have tried different combinations of the switch on the microphone, new batteries, and turning it off and on again.
When it's working, my 3 year old loves to play with it for the first 30 seconds, but it always ends in frustration.

Also, when a toy starts making noise in the middle of the night and you want it to shut off quickly and quietly so it doesn't wake the kids, it is irritating to find that pressing the power button causes it to tell you out loud that it's shutting off. If I wanted it to keep making noise, I wouldn't be turning it off. The battery compartment is screwed shut, so there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY to shut it up immediately. "Off" features like this bug me to no end.

Sings songs way too fast...

Pros

  • Durable
  • Easy to Use
  • Engaging
  • Good Sound Quality

Cons

  • Mic Can Only With Songs
  • Songs Too Fast

Best Uses

  • Entertainment
  • Imaginative Play
  • Older Children
  • Young Children

Comments about VTech Write and Learn Touch Tablet:

My biggest CON, is that the songs move so fast that an adult has a hard time keeping up. My 4 year old sounds like she is in a race to sing ABC's. The lcd display is great (if you could slow the songs down) as it promotes letter recognition as the songs play.

I got this product for my son when he turned 2 because he really wanted it. It kept him engaged and he loved to play with it. Unfortunately, one day the screen messed up and it doesn't really work anymore. I do plan to get another for him though and definitely recommend this to anyone for their child(ren).
