    I burn wood for my primary source of heat in central Ohio. I bought one of these units late last year, and used it until it broke. It was replaced [...] and I finished my cutting and splitting with it. In general, I'm quite happy with my purchase. Yeah, the first one broke unexpectedly and with absolutely no warning, [...]. (!!!) Now I have two for the price of one, after having a machinist friend do a little remedial work on a frozen pump cylinder and ram. This thing will split what most individuals have to split, that is logs up to around 24-30" diameter. Measure carefully when you cut, because the throat on this unit is exactly 18", and there is no wiggle room, no adjustment on it at all. Get used to the concept of physical labor -- you have to run the pump handles, and it is "easy" only in comparison to swinging a maul. I wish it had a longer (taller) wedge; another inch or two would help. If you're going to use this thing outdoors in winter temperatures, replace the stock hydraulic fluid with something light -- 10W worked for me. The stock stuff is too heavy and becomes thick and slow at temps much below 40 deg. F. I set mine up on a pair of cinderblocks, one under each end; that worked better than setting the unit on soft ground.

            I'm a sledgehammer and wedge guy. I was hoping the 20,00o pounds pressure (10-ton) would be all I need. Instead cedar elm and some pecan--well aged-- will not respond. Mesquite, oak, others do well after aging one year.
