Did not work well for top of stairs.

We bought this gate for the top of our stairs. We have a banister on each side on the top of our stairs plus a hand rail on one banister. We had to take our railing off to install the gate. Once the gate was installed it became quite clear that this gate was not the best fit for our staircase. The gate has a very narrow walk through area. We could not walk upstairs and pass through holding a basket of clean clothes. Also there is a bar running across the entire bottom portion of the gate which is a safety hazard for the top of stairs. The bottom bar hung over our top stair almost an inch. We had to climb over the bar, then reach for the stair. It would probably be a nice gate for lower level purposes, but not very good for top of stair functioning. The construction seemed pretty solid though.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
