If you buy this because you live in a snowy area and think it is sturdy enough to withstand a snowplow- guess again! Ours has been taken out too many times to count and is currently being held together w/ metal straps and wire! Will replace it with something cheaper in the spring. Bought this one after our cheap one was destroyed the first winter and figured this would fair better! Wrong! I know there is no claim from the company to the effect it could stand up to a snowplow, but the sturdy appearance would make you think so! (According to our highway dept. the plow never actually hits the mailbox- it's the force of the snow!)

Installed 33 of These To Date

About Me Avid Do-It-Yourselfer

Pros

  • Attractive Design
  • Displays Address Clearly
  • Signals Outgoing Mail
  • Weather Resistant

Cons

  • Fades in Sun
  • Newspaper Flap

Best Uses

  • Mail Receptacle
  • Newspaper receptacle

Comments about Step2 MailMaster Plus Mailbox Spruce:

I have installed 33 of these as part of a community mail box replacement effort to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. Boxes are durable and long lasting in North Carolina climate. Back newspaper flap allows papers to slide through and be exposed to weather - should be more ridged. To prevent mold and UV fading, coat unit initially and a couple of times a year with Armorall.

  • Signals Outgoing Mail

Cons

  • Wrong Hardware In Box

Best Uses

Comments about Step2 MailMaster Plus Mailbox Spruce:

Not sure if I would recommend this yet. Just put up and not as sturdy as I expected. Only two screws hold it up and they seem small.
Bag of assembly hardware came with 5 1.25 inch screws instead of 4 2.5 inch screws. 1.25 NOT long enough to hold box on to paperbox and post.

Mailbox looks nice, but not very useful for holding anything more than letters and magazines. Center of box is narrower than the opening making it unable to hold packages.

Cracked first time snowplow went by. Could not take the force of heavy snow thrown over by snowplow.
Mislead by picture of sturdy looking mailbox.
Replaced with old metal mailbox that had been up over 20 years. So much for new is better.
Would not recommend if you live in snowbelt area.

Comments about Step2 MailMaster Plus Mailbox Spruce:

The top of our mailbox was stolen, and Step 2 does not sell the mailbox itself. We were told we would have to buy the entire mailbox with post just to get the mailbox top. Very wasteful.

I have installed 16 of these as replacement units in my community as a fund raiser for the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) (homeowner pays actual cost plus a donation to the WWP); my labor is free. These mailboxes are easy to install - I sink a 4' 4x4 in 40 lbs of concrete 2' underground with 2' above - I level the post and let the concrete set overnight. Then it's a matter of 2 lag screws and 2 regular screws. These have beautified and updated the community. Mine has been up for over 9 years and still looks great. When the weather and sun's UV rays cause fading, I coat it with Armorall, which makes it looks like new!

I already had a post and had to shorten it but I installed this myself. Very simple. My only complaint is the color listing. I had one at my old house so I knew this already but I have the beige color and it's listed as gray. It matches my clay siding (beige) perfectly!! This a great mailbox. Easily accessible, roomy, sleek, and it comes with nice big address numbers. A great buy!!!

We bought a similar Step2 mailbox 12 years ago and still have it in use in a hot, harsh climate south of Houston (10 miles from the Gulf). It withstood Hurricane Ike! I like the ability to retrieve mail and newspapers from the two slots, without going into the street. I was looking for the same model to replace it, since the bottom around the post has started to crack after all these years, due to numerous riding lawnmower collisions (not by us!). What happened to the wider, two-slot version like we have? We receive two newspapers daily and find that the slots work very well for delivery. Also, larger envelopes, magazines & packages fit easily in our model without being crunched.

Poorly designed product, plastic bottom is VERY susceptable to breaking. Company should stick to toys. Plus, they are not warranted. Mine is annihilated after 6 mos. Drive down any street in OH and you'll see lots, all in the same shape. Giving up and going back to a traditional mailbox. Cheaper and lasts longer.
