This toy box was exactly what we needed. I am a petite woman and was able to get it into the house and put together with no assistance or power tools. It's sturdy even though it's light. We don't use it for books. Instead, we got small bins to put on the shelves for storage of small toys and such. It's easy for our daughter to use, and the style of the toy box isn't too intrusive in our family room.

I'd give this a 0 if I could! Maybe I got a defective one or something. Or they changed the design and majorly screwed it up. But this thing is impossible to open safely. The problem is that you can lift the lid fairly easily, but it does not slide back easily at all. Even using both hands, while pushing it back against the wall, I had serious difficulty. Then, if I could even get it pushed back, the next trick was getting it unstuck and back down into the closed position. Whatever the case, I would not feel safe allowing my child to use this. She could easily reach in to get a toy and drop the door on her head. No thanks! On top of that, without being able to push the door back, it isn't very easy to get toys in and out anyway. On top of that, while putting it together was easy, I was pretty annoyed that there weren't pre-drilled holes for the two screws that you have to use. There's a little indentation to show you where they need to go, but that's it. The instructions say that you can use a screwdriver, but that a drill is recommended. Well, unless you are a muscle man/woman, there is no way you will be able to just use a screwdriver. So keep that in mind if you actually do buy one of these: you NEED a drill, no doubt!Anyway, needless to say, I would not recommend this and I'm highly annoyed that I'm going to have to pack this up and drag it back to the store. It and the box are huge.

Comments about Step2 Lift and Hide Bookcase Storage Chest:
The bookcase shelves are great for storing puzzles, books, stuffed animals, and the inside storage is very spacious- holds a lot! The sliding top is easy for small kids to use. I liked it so much, bought a second for my son.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Excellent product - well worth it!!!

This item was purchased for a 1 year old for Christmas. So far so good but his Mom used to work in a Daycare Center. They had the same Toy Chests. Mom & Dad didn't put the screws in it for the bookcase because with the screws in you cannot get the lid back on.

My daughter loves this toy chest. It doesn't take up a much space and yet holds alot of toys, It's durable, even supports the 2 year old who loves to climb in and hide. Another baby is on the way and I am going to purchase another one for the next baby.

The assembly is really easy, except two screws have to be put in with no holes pre-drilled. I suggest using a power drill for this.

WE GOT THIS TOYBOX FOR MY SON'S 2ND CHRISTMAS, HE WAS 1 YEAR AND 3 MONTHS. WHEN HE OPENED THIS GIFT, HE HAD TO STAND INSIDE THE TOYBOX TO OPEN THE REST OF HIS PRESENTS. SINCE THEN, HE HAS BEAT ON THE TOYBOX, CLIMBED ON IT, AND TO THIS DAY (HE IS 3 YEARS AND 3 MONTHS NOW), HE WILL SIT ON TOP OF THE TOY BOX TO READ HIS BOOKS. IT IS STILL STANDING AND LOOKS BRAND NEW. I AM BUYING MY 1 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER A PINK ONE FOR CHRISTMAS. LOTS OF ROOM FOR ALL THOSE TOYS!

About Me Budget Shopper
This was exactly what we were looking for although after reading the other reviews I was skepticle. It was very easy to assemble. you do have to create your own holes when screwing in the screws but I did not have a problem with that. The lid works just as it should- no getting stuck or hard to use. The only thing that would make it better, but was as I expected, is that, because it is plastic, the shelf, when loaded with books has started to sag a little. The space inside is great and I have no complaints!
Not worth the money

About Me Working Parent
I have two of these. The first one we have is great, but now they make them a little cheap. They are hard to open even for adults, and they are two pieces so the top piece constantly slides back. If you can find an older model that's only one piece, buy that one.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
