I absolutely love this thing!! I may even drop my cable now! Everything is right at your finger tips. The quality is amazing!! Perfect wifi and the HD picture produced is excellent. You wont be sorry! Sony also shipped my order Super fast!! The keypad type search entry method is much easier to use than you would expect. I have no problem with it. Dont be hesitant to buy a refurbished unit. It appears 100% brand new and the way I see it, It had special attention from the factory. :)

It's an impressive device for accessing Internet content (movies, music, etc.), seems to work flawlessly over my wired network, and it was easy to set up. However, I also bought the SMP-N100 to play music from my home library stored on a Windows Vista PC and it's disappointing in that area. It did not recognize Windows Media Player 11 or Tversity as valid DLNA servers. I had to buy Twonky for it to recognize my home library through DLNA. But the worst shortcoming is that when you attempt to play a group of music files (based on artist, album, genre, etc.), you can only play them in alphabetical order. There is no shuffle. And there is also no concept of a play queue. So you cannot play songs from one artist and then add songs from another. These are very basic features needed for audio playback and hopefully will be added by Sony with the next firmware upgrade. Otherwise, it's not really usable as a digital audio player.

Comments about Sony SMP-N100 Digital Multimedia Receiver with WiFi:

It just doesn't stream Netflix very well at all. My 3.0M DSL connection doesn't seem to be fast enough to use this device to stream Netflix successfully. Our Wii has no problem, but this device constantly fails us.

Comments about Sony SMP-N100 Digital Multimedia Receiver with WiFi:

I've had several media players and I love this unit. I have tons of media on a server and this unit streams it all; pictures, music, and videos. I did have to load a DLNA server app on my server, but no problem. Sony even offers some content on free channels. I also have the newer N-200 and find little difference between the two. I did connect these devices using a wired connection. You might be able stream over WiFi, but save yourself some headaches and get wired.

I brought these during one of the weekly sales. They work great for our tvs that are not connectable to NETFLIX, etc. For the price they work very well. We've had no problems.

        Poor support from Sony

        By ruraltexan

Comments about Sony SMP-N100 Digital Multimedia Receiver with WiFi:

I bought this primarily to play movies from my computer. i have many .vob, avi and mkv files. The vob freeze halfway through, the avi files play perfectly and the mkv files are usually not recognized as a viable file. One out of three is not good enough. If offered the chance I would return it immediately. I would certainly NOT recommend this product

        False Advertising

Comments about Sony SMP-N100 Digital Multimedia Receiver with WiFi:

We bought this with the hope of watching hulu and listening to music on slacker or pandora. Hulu and Sony no longer have a relationship. Pandora no longer has a relationship with Sony. Slacker gave us 2 months then said we had to be a member on the website. I tried to register and link the two but it wouldn't work! This has been a total waste of our money and we won't buy from Sony again!

        Works as Described

Comments about Sony SMP-N100 Digital Multimedia Receiver with WiFi:

So far am happy with this Sony unit. I had way more problems setting up my wireless router than setting up this Sony unit. Set-up was quite easy once you figure it out. I think it would have been helpful for Sony to add the word 'recommended' in parenthesis next to the most common set up, on each screen. That would help a lot, in lieu of having to 'guess' the first couple of times, finally finding the right choices. After the right ones were found, it was very easy. Recommendations: after you set it up, write down (I did mine in Word) the steps so that a year from now you will know what to do, or photograph each step on your tv screen (I did that also). Also, if you can't get the Sony unit to connect to your wireless router, hit the 're-set' button on your router, then re-configure the Sony unit again. Then it should work. I had to do that, now works fine. I already had an account with Netflix, so set up with Netflix was incredibly easy! So far I am 99% happy with this box, with the exception of some very slight shuddering on only some of the shows (not all) that I watched on Netflix. I am running 40 mbps service, so was not expecting that. I haven't had this problem on any movies yet, only some tv shows. So far I highly recommend this Sony unit, and am very happy with it. OH, one more thing: I am using a 47" television and have absolutely no problem reading the icons or Netflix movie text. For anything that was 'too small', good Lord, are we SO LAZY in this country that we can't get up and stand up (or sit) right in front of the televsion for a couple of minutes??? C'mon people - I grew up way back when we didn't have remote controls and you had to walk up and turn the 'dial' on the television, to change channels or volume. (I'm only 48). So you can afford to stand in front of your tv once in a rare while if you need to to get everything to work or use it the way you want to! Geez....whiners....

        You will regret it

Comments about Sony SMP-N100 Digital Multimedia Receiver with WiFi:

I got this box for the online movie service which I use and one other app for which it works, the end. The firmware is not likely to be upgraded and the product seems end of life. Initially I was excited as it was the internet connection but then as I browsed my home PC over DLNA, I saw that it is a real chunk of rubbish. It will drive you mad. A friend has a Samsung SMART TV which is basically like iTunes with free apps gallore and a browser to boot you can buy one of their bluray boxes to get the same functionality on any TV . This thing is like a 486 PC. After one week it is not even used, and unlike a one night stand you will not have fond memories of this. I never bothered to write a review before but this caused a small part of my soul to wither.

        Sony Media Player

        By Michigander

Comments about Sony SMP-N100 Digital Multimedia Receiver with WiFi:

I purchased on sale, and already had a Roku, and I compared these two units fairly, and with differant locations with the wireless router, and with both systems. The Sony is a annoying system. Slow, locks up and difficult to set up, takes so much to even get a movie to play. I'm taking the Sony back, I have gave up. It locks up and is total unreliable system. The Roku hands down is simple, works flawless and I feel the best choice. I'm totally disappointed with the Sony and expected it to be a better unit but it's really just annoying, and was a waste of my time. I'll have two Roku's as soon as I get get this returned. I tried it a month, and it was a fair comparison, Sony failed miserably!

        Excellent!

Comments about Sony SMP-N100 Digital Multimedia Receiver with WiFi:

Wonderful product. I was never in doubt (even before purchasing). Setup was extremely easy. The only thing that I did not like (this has no effect in any way, shape or form to the device itself and the company that makes it) was setting up Netflix. The device told me to go to the computer and referred me to a website to enter a code. I went to the computer, I entered the code that it did not recognize. Instead, Netflix asked that I register a free trial account without the code. I went back and forth from the TV to the computer 8 times to get it to work. It really wore me out. There has to be a faster, more friendly way to setup Netflix (and any wireless streaming service) than this. Once I got it to work, it works great! Just not worth all the time it took to setup.

DO NOT BUY IF YOU ARE OUT OF US

Comments about Sony SMP-N100 Digital Multimedia Receiver with WiFi:

I got the device last week to watch movies trough netflix. I connected it, updated and then I realized there was no netflix application. I contact the support which was terrible and they mentioned it doesn't works outside the US. Hulu is not working. I can t see movies there are a lot of Portuguese channels(Costa Rica is an Spanish spoken country) so I am not able even to watch about 10 channels because they are in other language different than English.!!! I will not recommend this product.
