Bought these headphones 1 week ago and I must say they exceeded my expectations. The sound is amazing. Most stereo headphones sound too gushy, that is the sound comes at you all at once, you don't get the separation of bass, treble, and the higher notes, but with these you get the full spectrum of sound. These are not quite as good as the Bose headphones, but run a close second. Sony put alot of quality into these headsets, you can use them for a variety of occasions, including sports workouts, plus their foldable design makes them ideal to carry around almost anywhere. They're great!

LOVE!!! So Satisfied!!

By CKang

Comments about Sony MDRNC40 Lightweight Noise-Canceling Headphones:

I absolutely love my headphones. They are exactly what I needed to tune out the "Chatty Kathys" in the computer lab so I can listen to my music and get some work done!! They are tough and durable enough to survive me, which is a miracle in itself. My dad got himself a pair of the Boise noise cancelling headphones, so I was able to compare... Not only are mine a bit smaller than his they sound exactly exactly the same except without the ridiculous price tag. I've always loved Sony Products and see no reason to change :)))

Terrible headphones

By romain

Comments about Sony MDRNC40 Lightweight Noise-Canceling Headphones:

I love Sony, but I have to admit this is a terrible buy: the noise cancellation is basically inexistent. I've tried them in a train and a plane and never noticed the slightest noise reduction. Also, there's no sound pass-through: if the NC is off or once the batteries run out the headphones are rendered useless. That's the stupidest design decision ever! I got those as a gift, so I was shocked when I saw their price. I'd be really upset if I had paid my own money for it. Shame on Sony for that one, especially considering the great stuff they can come up with when they really try.

    Disappointing

    Pros

    • Attractive design

    Cons

    • Poor sound, poor noise cancelling

    Best Uses

Comments about Sony MDRNC40 Lightweight Noise-Canceling Headphones:

The Sony XBANC85D noise cancelling earbuds are disappointing. The sound is brittle and harsh, even when the signal is equalized to reduce treble or to boost bass. This is especially noticeable with vocal music and solo piano, though less so with orchestral music. Ben Heppner through these sounds like Jussi Bjorling, and a piano sounds like it's being played over the telephone. Other reviewers have noted the lack of bass, but I don't think that's the problem; rather, the problem is the exaggerated treble, which makes these earbuds almost unlistenable. As for the noise cancelling (I bought them for flying), when I tested them with power tools in a workshop, I could not detect any reduction of noise at all (apart from the passive isolation provided by the foam ear buds). I am not surprised that Sony has just reduced the list price. The Shures that I listened to have a much smoother sound, especially the 535s (about the same list price as the Sonys), but even the 315s (less than half as much) are much better than the Sonys, and seem to offer the same passive noise isolation.

Comments about Sony MDRNC40 Lightweight Noise-Canceling Headphones:

I have to try to use this headphones since 6 months that I bought, with several PMP ( ipod, sony walkman, cowon and samsung galaxy player) for to have all arguments and give a chance, but the result ALWAYS was the same: 1- the sound is terrible ( the worst bass ever and poorly clear) 2- noise cancelling function is a joke 3- Price ( that hurts!) is needlessly high for the function: Never again i¨ll buy a sony headphones, in the market exist very much better option in a 1/5 of the price of this piece of trash. My patiente has been broken

      Awesome !!!

      By ms1109

Comments about Sony MDRNC40 Lightweight Noise-Canceling Headphones:

I have been using these headphones for about a year now and I must say that they are really good. These are actually the first noise-canceling headphones I ever bought but I have tried different ones and this one is really good for its cost. Noise-canceling and the sound output is the best once the power is turned on but it is awful after the power is turned off. I would really recommend it for somebody who is looking for noise-canceling headphones that are not quite expensive as BOSE but we need to accept the fact that BOSE headphones are the best even though they are expensive.
