First of all, I diasgree with the reviewer below because this home theater system DOES save the settings. I unplugged mine for 3 days and when I plugged it back in the settings were saved. The sound quality is unreal for a $199 home theater system. Before this system, I bought the $299 Sony HT-SS370 which is supposed to be better than this one but is nowhere near close to the quality this one offers. The subwoofer is insanely powerful you wouldn't believe is non-powered. Your walls and your neighbors' will shake, guaranteed. As far as the small speakers is concerned, they provide clean crisp sound quality. Watching sports, specially football in 5.1 is simply beautiful with this home theater system as you can hear all the sounds from the crowd and from the players, and the sound when watching movies is great you'll love it. Overall excellent theater system for the price.

Biggest gripe: every time I go to play a DVD I have to enter my TV screen size and speaker configuration. It doesn't save my settings. It's not like I lose electricity a lot in my house; I have to reset the settings daily. Secondly, if I want to get a DVD out I turn it on (wait for it to wake up) then click the Eject button (unfortunately not on the remote) and the tray slowly slides out. They could make this whole process quicker. Finally, all too often I see "Operation not allowed at this time". I understand sometimes if you're watching a trailer the DVD manufacturer doesn't want you to skip it, but I should be able to push the Stop button at any time. Not on this DVD player. The other day it wouldn't let me press Stop while on the DVD menu.

Comments about Sony DAV-DZ170 BRAVIA Home Theater System:

Purchased from The Sony Store as a refurbished unit. What a tremendous deal! There was a bit of a learning curve for me as far as wiring, etc., but once I got everything squared away, I was impressed! I would like to have bass and treble controls, (if I'm missing something, please let me know!) but so far that has been a non-issue. Totally happy with this purchase!

    Worst product ever

Comments about Sony DAV-DZ170 BRAVIA Home Theater System:

I recently purchased the sony sorround sound system and its not a good product. Very dissapointed. The S-Air sytem constantly drops out which makes the back speakers stop working all the time. 5-6 times a movie the sound will just go out in the back speakers. I've contacted sony about this problem and they basically tell me that you cant have wireless internet because there frequency to run their speakers is the same 2.4ghz. Really wish I would of known this. Very annoying!!

Comments about Sony DAV-DZ170 BRAVIA Home Theater System:

overall an OK system. Just OK. 1000w rating is misleading, at best. Very disappointed with the sound volume - has to be on at least 5 to hear anything standing right in front of the speakers. Did not expect Sony to overrate the wattage like a cheap flea market system. DVD player works OK, needs an eject button on the remote. Can't individually adjust the volume of the sub woofer. I would have bought something else had I known all this. For the money, it's just an OK system.

Comments about Sony DAV-DZ170 BRAVIA Home Theater System:

Overall, I'd have to say that this is a great system. I'm not a full blown audiophile, but I know good quality sound if I hear it. I got it for my birthday a week ago and it's in my room right now. All I can say is wow. The sub hits and when it does, you'll know it and the highs and mids on the speakers are so clear. It couldn't have been any easier to set up: take it out of the box, match the colors up, and away you go. The A.CAL mic was iffy for me, I hadn't read the instructions so I hadn't anticipated how loud the test sounds would be. I'm not one for a bunch of remotes so I was a bit concerned as to whether I could program my tv remote to the stereo but I found out soon enough that my stereo remote was programmed to the tv already- perhaps because it's a Sony. All in all, a great system> If later on Sony had the option of playing movies through the USB attached to an iPod, that'd be a good selling point but for now, it suits my needs more than enough.

            Pros

Comments about Sony DAV-DZ170 BRAVIA Home Theater System:

The system is not chock full of customizable features but it gets the job done with fantastic sound. Would not consider myself an Audiophile by any means but I do enjoy premium sound so not having a fully customizable output interface is fine by me. Would like to have a separate control on the sub to bring it down a notch since I have a very small living room.
I did notice a major difference by using an actual tripod for the calibration mic during the set up process as opposed to simply setting the mic on the couch round about ear level. Am running the cable and PS3 through the TV via HDMI then sound from TV to this box via optical cable. Quality is great.
Do note the DAV-DZ170 model is not a BluRay player. (Seriously, BlueRay should be standard offering by now.) Not a big deal for me since I have the PS3 but is something I did not check pre-purchase as I was simply looking for a sound system upgrade from my old analog Pioneer receiver.
Has support for iPod connection and the remote control can control the iPod, however, the receiver does not display the iPod screen info out to the TV which is a skosh disappointing. Perhaps I have to look deeper into the settings on this....
Overall a great value for the price point.
