SONY reliability at a bargain price for a (nearly) full-featured Blu-ray streaming player is what this device delivers. I waited to write a review until I had more than three months of experience using this model (actually using three of these; living room, media room, and bedroom). I'll say upfront that I prefer SONY products and use SONY televisions and high-end audio equipment throughout the house. The initial set-up was easy; one device is on a wired connection and two use wireless bridges (read the box or specifications: "network ready") to connect to the Internet. Establishing the streaming services was a single effort for each service on each device and has been problem-free since the initial set-up. Registering the devices and linking services through the SONY site was the expected normal effort. Blu-ray playback has been flawless even using rental discs that aren't in pristine condition. The lack of sufficient onboard memory doesn't allow the use of disc-related online content without adding USB storage, but that is a minor annoyance rather than a true problem. Device updates haven't caused device or services disruptions or the need to re-establish any service connections. Additional streaming services added since the original purchase and set-up have been okay, but beyond the well-known services, i.e., Crackle, Hulu, Netflix, Pandora, etc., there really isn't much vital general listening or viewing content that are important to add. The user interface is not slick or pretty, but it is easily navigated because it is so simple. SONY user interfaces are generally kind of clunky by today's standards; however, they are simple and do what needs to be done and that's more important than pretty. Media Remote App support would make the interface more palatable, though. Overall, this is a performer of SONY-expected quality at a bargain price. DNLA support (like on the SMP-N200 media player) and Media Remote App support would make this an ideal device and an even greater bargain as well as a five-star rating. However, I'm very pleased with all that I got in performance and features for the price that I paid.

I am very frustrated after having my second PlayStation 3 stolen. The gaming isn't the thing we missed the most it was Netflix. Don't get me wrong the gaming was missed too. I bought this blu-ray player to be able to have the Netflix service available to us again. I also wanted to check out Hulu Plus. I bought three months worth of Hulu Plus on gift certificate/pre-paid cards. I still cannot get anything but youtube . The player makes you register with a code for each app you want[(it doesn't just come right on). Thats cool except for the error code I get each and everytime I've tried to get this hunk of you know what working. The Hulu Plus pre-paid cards I'm also finding out are really useless unless they get your credit card number too. So whats the reason for even selling pre-paid Hulu Plus if you still have to fork over your credit card number. To me this has been nothing I would recommend to anyone. Sony customer service is a joke too. You might as well put your story on tape and play it back for the 10 people you have to explain it to before being cut off . That would be less tedious than saying it over and over again.

Comments about Sony BDP-S185 Blu-ray Disc Player Black:

I love this player so much that I went and bought a second one. It does the movie streaming so we can watch movie from netflix. first one we had it about a year and now we have a second one. FYI sony does have two similar blue ray player one with WIFI and another without. Without WIFI is much cheaper but they look the same I think. I end up buying WIFI and I didn't have any problem connecting or streaming the movies. Thanks Sony for making this WIFI dvd player, I don't have to get smart tv.

Great Player!! Best player at any price!

Comments about Sony BDP-S185 Blu-ray Disc Player Black:

Bought this player to replace a BDP-S350 I have. The 350 still runs and I passed it on to someone that hasn't had the pleasure of using a blu ray player yet. The picture quality is amazingly accurate. And I bought this player from all the reviews I read from people that own it. And from the reviews on it I read online. So glad I decided on getting it. It loads super fast, DVD playback can be set to the full HD 1080p/24 and looks close to blu ray discs. Almost. Sound is great after you tweak it a bit and I ran the firmware update to find out how easy it is to do, even if my player was up to date. I would highly recommend this player for anyone that needs a new player or even if it is your first. Can't go wrong with any Sony player.

Comments about Sony BDP-S185 Blu-ray Disc Player Black:

I purchased the first one of these about six months ago. All I wanted was a good Blu-ray player that played Blu-rays and DVD's. With this, I got what I wanted, plus a little extra should I want it. Last month when I got a new TV and Home Theater down in the basement, I went out and got another one of these for the same purpose, and am equally satisfied with it.

    Best Uses

Comments about Sony BDP-S185 Blu-ray Disc Player Black:

Nice small DVD player which is what I needed. I was limited to a 14.5 in hole to put it in and this was one of the very few that meet that requirement. Looks nice and turns on fast. No lights to indicate it is on though. Often receive erros about networking after first turning it on and trying to stream. Remote as very limited compatibility with other TVs which is quite ridiculous in this day and age and annoying. Based on those quarks alone I would not recommend this device unless you have to have it for it's small size.

Comments about Sony BDP-S185 Blu-ray Disc Player Black:

This is the first blu-ray player I've bought and am very pleased overall. Would actually rate at 4.5 of 5 just because is a pain going to all the different links to activate content. There should be some way that Sony could make that easier. I like the fact that the remote can also operate the TV, even if not Sony. Kudos guys, great product. Thanks and keep going in this direction and you'll have loyal followers.

Comments about Sony BDP-S185 Blu-ray Disc Player Black:

I bought this player because it works with Standard TV's not just HD TV's. The red, white and yellow cables. It is not WiFi ready, only picks up WiFi signals via a USB device, I have ATT DSL fast internet, at 6mb per sec. Which is pretty fast and my computer and Roku both load fast, as well as my Wii game console. But this Sony Blue Ray player, always takes for along time to load aps. and sometimes doesn't load them at all. It is alot like the PSP's operating system. Really complicating to figure out. I am taking it back really soon.

      Great Player with Wired Internet

      By IndianFan

Comments about Sony BDP-S185 Blu-ray Disc Player Black:

I like this player for the money I paid to Sony.com. I liked the design, performance, style, setup and supported apps. But sorry to say that I returned this product to SONY for an exchange/replacement. Even after firmware update my network settings getting reset always automatically and I need to configure each time. But I appreciate SONY support for their timely help and guidance. Meanwhile I felt bad, because due to unit failure I need to replace/exchange it but SONY asked me to take care of the return shipping. (I understand SONY asks customer to take care for return shipping when we are returning for refund or replacement for another model). Anyways I am a great fan of Sony, hope they will send me an unit which will not have any issues. Thanks SONY again and I strongly recommend people to have this player (wired) because wired performs better than the WiFi ones... Good Luck

      Best Blu-Ray Player Ever

      By Anonymous

Comments about Sony BDP-S185 Blu-ray Disc Player Black:

The instructions where very easy. It only took about 30 seconds to setup, connect the HD cord to the unit, and the player was set to go. The on screen setup was also easy, only took about 1 minute to complete. Also, the unit is very compact. Easy to place anywhere. My only problem was the WIFI connector. Will have to purchase one. There is no way to connect the player to my router. Will have to use WIFI. Will purchase later.
