The 2 small drawers slide safely on metal runners with safety stops while the third larger drawer with full-extension slides is perfect for holding letter-size hanging files. For extra stability, the patented interlocking safety mechanism allows only 1 drawer to be open at a given time. With the patented T-lock drawer system assembling this pedestal is fast and easy.                         I use this as a file cabinet/side table in a spare bedroom. It looks very nice. The only con is that if both top drawers are open, the unit starts to tip so be careful
