I'm a handy-women myself and have used several other build-it shelves and furniture kits like this - the finish has never looked this good for being as cheap as this is. It's definitely a modern piece of furniture, simple! The black/brown finish matches other things I have, which is a plus.

All the boards that make it up are are thick (0.6in/1.6cm), which feels thick enough for what it does.
The backboard is a thinner (.03in/1mm), three-fold particle board so the finished product has two lines from where the folds were, for those looking into appearance.
I have it holding my medium-sized TV, small decorations and heavy books.

You can get it done in 45 minutes to an hour without power tools; give or take your experience with build-it furniture kits and the fitness level of your forearms. It would no-doubt be a 30 minute job if you had a power drill.

Each of the four corners has two long screws.
You can nail the backboard with the tiny nails provided, but a staple gun might be easier. I don't have a hammer so I had to wack them in with a metal bracket and it was easy enough.

I bought this bookshelf at a local meijer market at even more cheaper price ([$]) and it is not only cheap but also very sturdy and looks good also. It's been almost 2 years now and it's been holding at least 60lbs of hardcover books altogether very well. At first I bought one and added two of them more. And it's also fairly easy to assemble. I am a handy woman and it took me for a couple of hours to put together. One thing that I don't like is that the back panel is a very thin kind of cardboard, but it's not a big deal given that it holds so many heavy books so strong. Highly recommend!

The directions say that you do not need a drill to assemble, this is a lie. Unless you have super human strength, you cannot get the flat tipped screws into the wood pre drilling a hole first. I have been at the first step for hours now because I do not have a drill. do not get if you dont have a drill.

This is a great bookshelf for the price! Looks nice and it's sturdy. Goes great in our child's room!

All I can say is I just drove very far to [...]to purchase the same thing last weekend for [$] bucks and I thought THAT was a steal!!! Silly me! I should have checked Meijer's website first! I could have purchased 3 bookshelves here for the price I paid for one at [...]. Next time, Meijer's website first!
