Comments about Redmon Bongo Buddy Bag - Alligator:

We use these types of hampers for all our five children, ages 6 months to 11 years. They're a fun little treat in the bedrooms regarding laundry clean-up and storage. All of our children who would express joy at a new laundry hamper (we're simple people :) ) loved coming home to find these set up in their rooms.

The alligator i bought for our 11-year-old son. He loves it, but that has much to do with his personality; i can picture some older children feeling this too babyish for them. But i've also seen college students tote these around, unashamedly. And i'm waiting for a Bongo Buddy for me -- Redmon produces these in themes ("Under the Sea", "Barnyard")for a limited duration and i am waiting to see if they come up with anything i would like for my 35-year-old self!

The Bongo Buddy line of pop-up hampers are unique from other brands making similar animal-shaped hampers in that they are diligent to design it so that the clothes definitely go into a mouth of the animal, versus lifting the animal's entire head and dropping it in there. Of course this is a frivolous detail, but it's a detail that i appreciate and prefer, just because it's a little more thoughtful and fun. It's worthwhile if there isn't a large price difference -- and there isn't. With some of the animals, like the frog we got for our 9-year-old son, the mouth opening is the entire opening of the hamper, so just dumping clothes out into the washer is easy. With others, including the alligator, the opening is created in a fabric hood over the hamper opening, so you must reach in and pull the clothes out most of the time. This is not a big deal if you sort or inspect as you load the washer anyway, but if you prefer to dump them in, you may find some models less appealing.

Regarding the Alligator, his eyes don't stand up so easiy and his teeth don't stay outside once he's had clothes pushed in, pushing his teeth down. But he still looks good. A piece of tape or thread keeps his eyes up if you're obsessed with perfection in your laundry hampers.

The hamper seems sturdy enough and easy to clean, but my children are generally careful with their toys because we taught them early on if they break it from abuse, they can expect not to have it replaced. With rough play, though, i can easily see the nylon tearing. And our neighbor kids who are less respectful of my sons' toys when they come to play make me nervous when they get near the Bongo Buddies. These seem, to me, about as dense and strong as a good umbrella or a tent (not a top-of-the-line tent). So we don't roll our laundry down the stairs for fun anymore, like we did with our old mesh bag hampers. The carry straps themselves are strong, but since they are sewn to thin nylon, which by nature, can only take so much i don't feel confident that my hamper will last long if i use them, so i carry the hamper by wrapping my arms around the Buddy for fear holes will eventually develop in the nylon around the stitches.

My greatest concern when buying these was capacity -- bigger kids' clothes take up more space as the week goes on. It was hard for me to picture how much i could expect them to hold reading the dimensions. They easily hold a little more than a week's worth of bulky winter clothes for my tall 11-year-old. Not holding more than that makes it more motivating to do the laundry weekly rather than let it go, but if you need to for a little bit, you can. Different animals hold differing amounts, but not drastically so. At present we have the alligator, the toad and a penguin made by another company. The penguin holds the most (so my two daughters, 6 and 3, and my baby all share) but its head flips back rather than feeding the mouth, and slightly less can be stuffed in the alligator or toad but their capacity is still plenty for our needs.

Cleaning and storage are easy. i've had to remove peanut butter from the side, and i just took it to the shower with some dish soap (my kitchen sink is tiny; if yours is large you may be able to skip giving your Buddy a shower in the bathroom). It stores compactly with the help of velcro straps that attach to c-straps on the hamper (not the elastic on car shades that wears out after one summer). i wouldn't store anything that could potentially have a sharp edge, or even a pointy one (e.g. some airplane toys with a propeller) but for a lot of clothes, or relatively rounded toys, it's great. If you want to store shoes i'd consider a different animal than the alligator, one with a larger mouth opening so you can see inside better to quickly find them and pull them out.

i gave the Alligator Bongo Buddy four stars out of five because it's worth the hard-earned money i paid for it. However i have a feeling i'll be replacing it since thin nylon and pokey pop-up wires can only last so long together. i certainly recommend these hampers.
