I bought this to replace a 5-yr-old All-in-One that was still working, but I wanted to upgrade to wireless and get rid of the need for a desktop computer to be running as a print server. Easily connected to my home wireless network, installed the software on 2 laptops and a desktop, and was up and running in about an hour. Print quality is very good, speed is excellent (much better than the older machine, plus the wait time is almost zero.) Scans are beautiful, and the newer scan management software is an improvement. The fax was very easily set up as well. A nice printer and easy to install and use. Re the reviewers who said their printouts shoot out onto the floor: To fix this, just pull out the little extension shelf on the front edge of the output tray, and flip up the little catcher dam if necessary. The internal workings are a bit louder than the older machine, but not so loud as to be a concern.

Extremely disappointed with this printer. I'm an expert PC/network guy, so I had no problem hooking this up to work with my wireless network - some stuff worked great, such as scans over the network, OCR, and printing is fast. As others have said, it's incredibly noisy, although if it worked, I wouldn't care. duplex printing is great. BUT my printer is now afflicted with the dreaded power-save problem that HP refuses to address. Yes, I've upgraded the firmware and the software - it just got WORSE. so now, to get the printer to work at all, I have to physically unplug it, plug it back in, and it works for 5~10 mins at best. My next home printer will not be an HP. I find it ridiculous that HP is well aware of this issue had has not resolved it. BTW - there's a lot of shill reviews on this site, from the "TOP contributors" : some of them are clearly cut-n-paste from each other! And please, people - don't write reviews if you "just bought this printer" - wait for 3 months and come back after you've dealt with the item for a while (and had to replace the inkjet cartridges for more money than you paid for the printer :-)

impulse purchase gone bad

By techdummy

Comments about HP Officejet 6500 Wireless All-in-One Printer:

when we bought a new computer (had to) we were offered this printer (didn't really need) at a great price. it does fax, which we only do occasionally, but were using an old actual fax machine since my photosmart did not have that function. so, i thought, i can get rid of two machines & replace with one. i wish i'd shopped a bit. well, i still have my old photosmart, which i like my photo prints off of better &, i think, uses less ink. but it doesn't fax & it isn't wireless. so i got rid of the fax, but now have 2 printers. like most hp printers, it tells you you are running out of ink waaaay before you are actually out. but then i never know how much longer it will last, so i'm nervous, sometimes for months, about that. or, i buy early & hold. also. i frequently find it "offline" after i've sent something & there is no way to put it back "online" from the printer software. i had to re-install it once due to other hardware upgrades & that produces a duplicate set of "printers" in my computer. i deleted the extras once, but then had to install again & now, sometimes (if printing from e-mail for instance) one printer works & if from a different application (internet site) it prints to the "other" printer. of course, there IS only one! i find this very confusing. also, it's a bit too big for home use. and, as i said before, i think the print quality and ink usage were better with my older photosmart, as regards photos. also, i don't seem to be able to operate any of the features from the printer. i have to go thru the hp software on the computer to make things work. not sure why i have the buttons. but it faxes......

Worked Great . . . until the warranty expired!

By Scooter56

Comments about HP Officejet 6500 Wireless All-in-One Printer:

This multi-function machine worked great . . . until 3-months after the warranty expired. The ability to use the device as a copy machine was among the top reasons I purchased it. After 15 months of moderate use, the "copy" function on the device's instrument panel simply stopped working. The machine partially feeds a new sheet of copy paper, stops, and generates and "out of paper" error. I have no issues printing from the PC, however. After 30+ minutes online with HP tech support, I was basically told that I was stuck . . . warranty expired, sorry. Given the cost of this machine and the fact that it only lasted 15-months, I would be hard-pressed to recommend any HP inkjet printer.

6500 Wireless Printer

Comments about HP Officejet 6500 Wireless All-in-One Printer:

I find all the features on the printer excellent, except for the Fax. It seems to be missing something in its operation. It works very slow through the Solution Center and I don't get any report that the fax was sent. I guess I will have to try reloading the software to see if it woks any better.

Very good printer

Comments about HP Officejet 6500 Wireless All-in-One Printer:

Setup was easy for Windows 7 but had to download software. The printer is fast. The features are great. Not hooked up wireless at this time but shouldn't be hard. Only problem is that it seems to use too much ink especially the cyan. Would give it 5 stars if not for that.

Solid machine

By MrDave

from Redwood City, CA

Comments about HP Officejet 6500 Wireless All-in-One Printer:

I have had the machine about two months, mostly for home use, and have used all its basic functions--print, fax, scan, copy. Set up was easy. It is great having it stuffed away in a corner of the house out of site. I am impressed with the function where I scan a document into it and then walk back to my computer to find a window open with that document available as a PDF, which I can then email, or print and sign and then scan in again to send as a PDF to whomever I need to email it to. A problem I have had: First, sometimes paper sticks together so that up to ten sheets of paper are coming through it at the same time. HP helpers said to riffle the paper and then blow on the edges that feed into the printer first. I think my paper is too low grade--didn't happen with my older, lower level HP printer.

Reasonably priced printer

By daniel4ever

Comments about HP Officejet 6500 Wireless All-in-One Printer:

We purchased this printer when my son's printer died - so I got a new printer, and he got my hand me down (for college). My husband had previously purchased two printers of this model for his workplace. FWIW, my husband and I are both computer professionals, and luckily have a good bag of tricks from our years of working with computers and peripherals. Set up and installation was a horrible experience. Every time we hit another glitch, my husband would say, "We had this same problem with the ones at work. We did everything except stand on our heads to make it work. Finally it just started working." What specifically were the problems? In order of appearance: 1) The instructions are the worst I have seen in a while. In trying to make them user friendly, with nice photos and a minimum of words, they made them practically useless. Contrast this with two large booklets included, one for setting up the wireless function, and the other for setting up the fax function. 2) There are NO instructions on how to set up the clock. The instruction sheet just has a picture of the console, and a little hourglass, like that is enough to know what is expected? It kept asking us to give it a number, and we finally figured out it wanted a fax number, one of the features we do not plan to use. Then it got stuck in a "printer preparation - please wait" infinite cycle that I finally just turned the darn thing off after waiting 30 minutes and still no result. 3) The paper feeder would not catch the paper and feed it through. The printer kept telling us to load paper in the tray, but there was already paper there. My husband said what they had done at work was try different stack heights of paper, until they found one that worked. Once we got it going, it seems to feed ok, but it took us at least 15-30 minutes to get it started the first time, and then it jammed in the duplexer unit. 4) The software installation CD would not work in my computer. My husband took the CD to the computer he uses and it read it ok, and he told me this also happens all the time at work, where a CD is unreadable on some machines, and he scouts around until he finds one that can read it. We then transferred the files via the home network and installed from the hard drive. 5) During the process of looking for updates on the HP website, and downloading and installing them, the computer crashed, with the message that "could be caused by new software or hardware." This cascaded into a series of problems necessitating numerous reboots and finally after midnight, things returned to mostly normal. We had started the process of setting up this printer around 8 pm... 6) This printer spits out the printed page with gusto, so be sure to pull out the extension on the paper catcher, or your pages will end up all over the floor. Despite it all, I am enjoying using this printer, but it is noisy as many people report. When it starts printing, there is a lot of whirring and clacking and the table I have it set on shakes. The scanner does a very nice job of capturing the colors in photos! And I love the copy feature. Just don't believe the "easy setup."

Wireless does not work

By Throttlejock

from Undisclosed

Comments about HP Officejet 6500 Wireless All-in-One Printer:

I am on my second 6500 in an attempt to get the wireless feature to work. When in the sleep mode, it take from 5 to 20 minutes to begin the print process after print has been selected. Finally gave up and use it as a wired printer. One manager did admit that the 6500 had a problem in the wireless mode. Unit is very noisy!!!! Print quality and other features all OK, but if you need wireless, do not buy this unit!!! I also have a Photosmart Premium and using the same computer and wireless modem the wireless feature works fine.

Comments about HP Officejet 6500 Wireless All-in-One Printer:

I highly recommend this printer, I am an old Printer of the offset press days, This unit gives me back my old days of beaning in the printing trade, I now can do my own printing at home. I was very impressed with the easy set up & performance of this unit. I printed out the user Guide book for this unit. It meet all my expectation's. This printing of both sides of guide sure saves on paper & ink. Outstanding performance. Well done Haven't tried fax part of unit, still not to sure on setting up this part? So far one of the best printer's I Own. Thanks for coming up with this unit. Don & Maureen P.
