I got this originally to hoist bicycles out of the way in the garage, but I can't lift them high enough to walk under them, so didn't see the benefit in tradeoff to the inconvenience of not having your bike on the floor for easy access. I installed it over the minivan to hoist up a Yakima cargo box off the roof rack. It just barely lifts it up a few inches over the car, so this application works well. It keeps the box in an unobstructive place for storage and makes installation and removal a snap. I bought a second one to lift a 10' Zodiak boat up out of the way. The spreader bar that comes with it helps to keep the slings short to lift the boat as high as possible. Still, it's maybe 6' off the ground, so not everyone can walk under it. By the time you account for the unit's standoff from the ceiling, a length of cable for safe distance, and the slings, the top of anything is already 2 ft from the ceiling. The unit works well, is sturdy and convenient. Just consider carefully what you want to lift and how high it will be once hanging. As the picture shows, lifting stuff high enough to drive the front end of your car underneath it is a good application. The garage ceiling in the picture, by the way, is not standard height. It looks 10' or 11' high. With the standard height garage ceiling, it is hard to lift stuff up high enough to walk under it.
One further comment, the second unit came with a 2' cord, unlike the 8' cord on the first unit. You need to plan for an extension cord, too, most likely.

I needed it to store a kayak near the ceiling in my garage. The Garage Gator does just that. I did have to buy straps to go around the kayak and hook onto the bar on the Garage Gator, and that was a problem, but not with the hoist. It does exactly what I hoped it would.
