We bought our Coleman lantern from Meijer.com the end of September 2009. While it is not as bright as a propane camping lantern, it has many advantages. First, you can safely use this one INSIDE the tent. I prefer this to a flashlight when visiting the campground bathroom at night. The dimmer is just the perfect amount of light while dressing inside the tent when dark, but with privacy. In pitch black campgrounds, the dimmer's great to light the picnic table area for instance, while you are a distance away like sitting around the campfire. Or to turn on without waking anyone when you need to find a tissue or your thermos for a drink in the middle of the night. Be sure & save your receipt for the 5 yr warranty. Our handle just broke & needed our receipt for the warranty.

I will use it during power-outages for an emergency light. The light is very powerfull so we can even read books around the latern. It needs 4 big c-batteries. I'm not crazy about using batteries but for the emergency it's the safest way for indoor use. Thanks to LED bulbs high power light with less batterie power needed.

Coleman has two powerful LED lanterns and this is the lower brightness version (also about half the price) but it lights up a room bright enough on full power to read by and get around. Perfect for even large tents or emergency lighting. No worry about tipping over or getting burned so it's safe around even little kids. It takes eight D-cell batteries so it is heavy and it's about the same size as a full-sized gas lantern but it is made very well.

The unit uses a rotary brightness control that goes from full brightness to almost a conventional night light illumination level. The control itself, though, seems a bit intermittent when turned - not terribly smooth. This could be because it needs used more or because the internal contacts are dirty or defective (I haven't used it enough yet to find out which).

The light distribution is incredibly even and actually projects a good, even glow when it's above head level so hanging it in a tent or cabin would still give great illumination.

Definitely a keeper.

This is the brightest lantern I own. It's a monster though. Don't think about hiking with it cause it's huge. The dimmer switch is smooth.

You should have a couple of these in every house subject to power disruptions due to hurricanes, storms or fickle power supply. Forget the old oil lanterns and incandescent solutions. This solution gets you out of the dark ages!
